Birth Trauma Therapy
“Trauma isn’t what happened to you…trauma is how it made you feel” Dr Gabor Mate
Birth trauma can happen to anyone. Mother. Birth Partner. Birth professional.
Birth trauma is any experience you have had during pregnancy, birth and postnatally that caused you to feel unsafe, unheard or out of control. It could even be a real or perceived threat to your own or babies life.
“Traumatic events are almost impossible to put into words” – Dr Bessel Van der Kolk.
There is a really good reason for this. When you experience a traumatic event the part of your brain responsible for speech is bypassed, meaning you are unable to describe how you feel. When you feel threatened the stress response switches on and stops the part of your brain responsible for logical thought from processing what is happening to you.
One of the benefits of the therapies that I offer is that is can be a non-disclosure therapy. This means you don’t have to talk about how you feel or even what happened to you.
You will be guided in how to regulate your nervous system, then taken into a deep state of relaxation. I will guide you through the process gently and at your pace.
The aim of the therapeutic techniques that I use, are to help you to reprocess your memories of the event, allowing them to be stored as just another memory. This means you will be able to think and talk about your experience without the emotions of that moment all rushing back to you
What is the bravest thing you’ve ever said? asked the boy.
‘Help,’ said the horse.
‘Asking for help isn’t giving up,’ said the horse. ‘It’s refusing to give up.
